Grease can overload the sewer collection system causing sewage backups into your home, sewage overflows into yards and streets, and costly repairs.
What can you do to avoid this problem?
1. Never pour fats, oils and grease down the kitchen sink. Instead, pour the grease into a sealable container, refrigerate or freeze it until it hardens, then place it in the trash for disposal.
2. Wipe off excess grease from plates and pans with paper towels before washing. Throw the greasy paper towels in the trash for disposal.
3. Avoid using the garbage disposal. Garbage disposals simply reduce the size of the food particles that don’t belong in the plumbing system anyway. Scrape food particles into the trash, instead, before washing dishes. Put baskets/strainers in sink drains to catch food scraps. Empty the strainers into the trash for disposal.
What about restaurants?
Restaurants discharging into the Rogers sanitary sewer collection system must have a grease trap or interceptor. These devices are designed to separate the fats, oils and grease from the water going down the drain. Rogers’ City Code specifies that the grease traps must be designed and manufactured to handle the amount expected, be properly installed, and cleaned frequently to keep them operating efficiently.
